Chelsea 2019 preview: McQueens celebrates bees

McQueens Flowers will highlight the importance of bee conservation in two immersive installations at Chelsea Flower Show (21 – 25 May 2019).

In collaboration with bee behaviourist Dr David Lawson, McQueens Flowers has created two installations which aim to educate visitors about the behaviour of bees and their important role in food production. The immersive installations will showcase at this year’s RHS Chelsea Flower Show.

Honey, I’m Home! in The Artisan Area & Tree Tops Area (AT99), will feature a hexagonal honeycomb hive to be filled with bees made by visitors throughout the show, while in the great tunnel Per Oculus Apum or ‘Through the Eyes of Bees’ (TUN633), a canopy of flowers extending across the ceiling will spiral downwards and spill out onto the floor.

The canopy of flowers, made from wild, organic bee-friendly flowers in vibrant yellows and purples, aims to demonstrate how bees see flowers in ultra-violet, electrostatic patter noises will show how flower stems help to guide bees (the electric potential of a petunia flower-stem over time as a bee lands) and honey scents from Miller Harris will waft through the tunnel to provide a truly immersive experience.

Bees play a crucial role in producing a third of the food we eat. Considering the recent analysis exposing a shocking decline in insect numbers and the likelihood of their total extinction, the installations come at a particularly pertinent time. The aim is to invite people to join the campaign to save bees and other insects.
